Erections help keep your penis healthy - use it or lose it!

Erection problems are common as men get older. And they're something no man welcomes.

Naughty vegetables banned from shelves

"When you get erectile dysfunction, there's this stigma of 'I can't perform, I'm not a man anymore' and it's quite damaging," says specialist Dr Doug Lording, who has worked in the field for more than 30 years.

When it comes to a healthy penis though, the principle of 'use it or lose it' seems to apply.
There's even the idea that older men could perhaps use sex as a way to reduce their odds of developing erectile problems in the first place.

But does regularly having sex really help a man avoid developing erection problems?

While there's no, ahem, hard proof, the answer is quite possibly yes, says Lording, Honorary Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Monash University and an andrologist at Melbourne's Cabrini Hospital.

"I think it probably does, but I don't think it's a proven thing. I don't think there's been enough work done to say there's conclusive evidence that's the case."

It's certainly true however that "getting erections helps keep the penis healthy" he says. But whether sexual intercourse has benefits for the penis over and above those provided by a man's normal night time erections, or by him masturbating, hasn't been tested.

Watermelon has Viagra-like effects

In 2008, a team of researchers at Texas A&M found ingredients in watermelon that deliver Viagra-like effects to the body’s blood vessels may even increase libido. “Arginine boosts nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, the same basic effect that Viagra has, to treat erectile dysfunction and maybe even prevent it,” said Dr. Bhimu Patil, director of Texas A&M’s Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center in College Station, according to Science Daily.

Although watermelon may not be as organ-specific as Viagra, it can give Viagra-like effects without the drug’s side effects. This may be good news for men who cannot safely take erectile dysfunction medications if they have heart problems, high or low blood pressure, a history of stroke, eye problems, severe liver disease, and kidney disease, says the Mayo Clinic. Men without a history of the health problems listed above can experience side effects such as headache, indigestion, and in rare cases, dizziness or fainting.

Herbs for erectile dysfunction

Which herb can you use to achieve a better erection? - Mayo Clinic

Erectile dysfunction — difficulty maintaining an erection sufficient for sex — is a common problem. You've likely seen advertisements on the Internet or in magazines for erectile dysfunction herbs or supplements, and you may wonder whether they might work for you.

Erectile dysfunction herbs and other natural remedies have been used in Chinese, African and other traditional medicines for many years. But finding out whether erectile dysfunction herbs or supplements work, and if they're safe, can be tricky. Unlike prescription medications for erectile dysfunction such as sildenafil (Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra) and tadalafil (Cialis), most erectile dysfunction herbs and supplements haven't been well studied or tested. Some can cause side effects or interact with other medications.

DHEA Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a building block for sex hormones. It may help some men if they have low testosterone (hypogonadism). DHEA can interfere with your natural balance of sex hormones. It can cause acne and may lower "good" high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.
Epimedium (horny goat weed) This traditional Chinese medicine may help erectile dysfunction. There's little evidence about the safety or side effects of epimedium. It may cause blood thinning and lower blood pressure.
Folic acid and vitamin E In some men taking sildenafil (Viagra), these vitamins seemed to help with erectile dysfunction. But more studies are needed to determine whether there's a clear benefit. Except in high doses, there's little risk of side effects from these vitamins.
Ginkgo Ginkgo may help erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penis. It may also help ease sexual side effects caused by antidepressants. Ginkgo may increase your risk of bleeding. This could be dangerous if you're going to have surgery or you take a blood-thinning medication.
Ginseng Asian (Panax) ginseng has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine for a number of conditions. A few studies show that ginseng may help with erectile dysfunction. This herb is generally considered safe. However, it may lower blood sugar levels, so use caution when taking ginseng if you have diabetes. In rare cases, ginseng has been linked to mania when taken with certain antidepressants.
Yohimbe Yohimbe is derived from the bark of the African yohimbe tree. A prescription form (yohimbine) may help with erectile dysfunction — especially if it's due to psychological causes. The prescription form of this herb has been linked to a number of side effects, including increased blood pressure, fast or irregular heartbeat and anxiety.
Zinc Zinc may improve erectile function in men who have a zinc deficiency. Don't take zinc in high doses. Too much zinc can harm your immune system and cause other health problems.

Get an erection by wearing this condom

New condom to boost your erection

Things are pointing up -- ahem -- for the CSD500, the so-called "Viagra condom" from British pharmaceutical company Futura Medical, and for Reckitt Benckiser PLC (the makers of Durex-branded condoms have exclusive gobal rights to bring the CSD500 to market) after the condom was recommended for Conformité Européenne (CE) mark approval today in the European Union. CE marking is a mandatory step before the condoms can be placed on the market in the 29 countries known as the European Economic Area.

Futura Medical specializes in transdermal delivery of active ingredients within the fields of sexual health and pain relief and has been working since 2008 to seek approval to bring the CSD500 to market. Because of the product's pharmaceutical properties it must be approved as a "Class III medical device with an ancillary medicinal substance."

The condom contains a medicated gel substance in its tip that has been demonstrated to dilate the arteries and increase blood flow to the penis, resulting in "the maintenance of a firmer erection in healthy men during intercourse whilst wearing a condom, increased penile size and a longer lasting sexual experience for women," according to a 2008 study.

Alternative cures for erectile dysfunction

Several alternative treatments are used to treat erectile dysfunction, but more studies are needed to see whether they are safe or effective. Alternative treatments used for erectile dysfunction include:

* Acupuncture
* Korean red ginseng (Panax ginseng)
* Yohimbine
* DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), a hormone that's a building block for testosterone
* Ginkgo
* L-arginine

While some of these supplements appear to be relatively safe, others are more risky and can interact with medications or cause other problems. Before using any supplement, OK it with your doctor to make sure it's safe for you — especially if you have chronic health problems.

Herbal Viagra
Some alternative products that claim to work for erectile dysfunction can be dangerous. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings about several types of "herbal Viagra" because they contain potentially harmful drugs not listed on the label. Some of these drugs can interact with prescription drugs and cause dangerously low blood pressure. These products are especially dangerous for men who take nitrates.

Avocados are good for your testicles

More good natural foods to perk up your sex life

The Aztecs referred to avocados as, ahem, testicles, because of their physical shape. But the scientific reason why avocados make sense as an aphrodisiac is that they are rich in unsaturated fats and low in saturated fat, making them good for your heart and your arteries. Anything that keeps the heart beating strong helps keep blood flowing to all the right places; in fact, men with underlying heart disease are twice as likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED).

Various treatment for erectile dysunction

Viagra not the only solution

Some men with erectile dysfunction can't get an erection at all. Some men can get an erection, but it doesn't last long enough or isn't firm enough to have satisfying sex.

For many men, erection difficulties are caused by a physical problem. An injury, illness or problems with your hormones can all cause erection problems. Some medicines have side effects that can cause problems, too. Your emotions, such as stress, unhappiness and depression, can also play a part.

Men who have erection problems often don't like to ask for help, but there are good reasons for seeing a doctor. First, there are treatments that can help you. Second, erection problems can be an early warning of other health problems like diabetes and heart disease. Few men with erection problems will have these conditions. But your doctor may suggest tests to check for them, just to be safe.

Get It Up With Watermelon Juice

Watermelon found to help men achieve erections

New research suggests that watermelon may produce effects in the body similar to that of Viagra, perhaps pointing the way to a natural remedy for men suffering from erectile dysfunction, says Bhimu Patil of Texas A&M University.

Research conducted by Patil and others has recently revealed that the flesh of watermelon contains higher levels of the amino acid citrulline than researchers had thought. Until then, most of the citrulline was believed to reside in the inedible rind of the fruit.

"We have known that watermelon has citrulline," Patil said, "[but] watermelon has more citrulline in the edible part than previously believed."

This is significant because the body converts citrulline into arginine, another amino acid that functions as a precursor to nitric oxide. Nitric oxide, in turn, plays a critical role in the dilation of blood vessels and the process of penile erection.

Horny Goat Weed As Good As Viagra

Research shows Horny Goat Weed is a good Viagra alternative

The soft green heart-shaped leaf of the horny goat weed could hold the key to a new drug for treating erectile dysfunction. Researchers say the Viagra alternative could be as effective as the famous blue pill, but have fewer side-effects.

Horny Goat Weed

Mario Dell'Agli of the University of Milan, Italy, and colleagues tested four plants which are used as natural aphrodisiacs in traditional cultures to establish their potential as alternatives to Viagra.

Viagra's active compound, sildenafil, works by inhibiting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5). Because PDE5 helps control blood flow to the penis, inhibiting PDE5 promotes male erection.

Dell'Agli and his colleagues tested the four plants in vitro to see how efficient they were at inhibiting PDE5. Just one – Epimedium brevicornum, also known as horny goat weed and Bishop's Hat – had an effect. This confirmed previous studies showing that icariin, a compound found inside the horny goat weed, is a PDE5 inhibitor.

Risk of ED by cyclists may be a thing of the past

Policemen getting new bikes and better erection with improved saddles

Special saddles could be used to help bicycling police officers overcome erectile dysfunction and groin numbness, scientists claim.

Police officers who spend a large part of their working day on bikes, and a large number of recreational cyclists, are often said to have problems getting erections.

But researchers say changing their saddles could dramatically improve their sex lives.

90 US officers took part in a study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in Cincinnati where they had noseless bicycle saddles installed.

After six months of using the noseless saddles the officers form 5 metropolitan regions reported better erections and greater increased sensitivity in there penis.

Use it or lose it

Researchers: Make frequent use of your penis or risk getting ED

THURSDAY, July 3 (HealthDay News) -- Frequent sexual intercourse may cut down on a man's chances of developing erectile dysfunction, Finnish researchers report.

The researchers found that men who said they had sexual intercourse less than once a week had twice the risk of developing erectile dysfunction, compared with men reporting having sexual intercourse once a week.

Among men who had sexual intercourse less than once a week, there were 79 cases of erectile dysfunction per 1,000 men. That number dropped to 32 cases per 1,000 among men who said they had sexual intercourse once a week, and it dropped even further, to 16 per 1,000, among men who said they had sexual intercourse three or more times a week, the researchers reported.

More reasons for men to have frequent intercourse

Regular intercourse keeps men healthy and keeps ED at bay

Having intercourse more often may help prevent the development of erectile dysfunction (ED). A study published in the July 2008 issue of The American Journal of Medicine reports that researchers have found that men who had intercourse more often were less likely to develop erectile dysfunction.

Analyzing a five-year study of 989 men aged 55 to 75 years from Pirkanmaa, Finland, the investigators observed that men reporting intercourse less than once per week at baseline had twice the incidence of erectile dysfunction compared with those reporting intercourse once per week. Further, the risk of erectile dysfunction was inversely related to the frequency of intercourse.

FDA Warns Against Using Chinese Herbal Formula

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers not to buy or use Super Shangai, Strong Testis, Shangai Ultra, Shangai Ultra X, Lady Shangai, and Shangai Regular, also marketed as Shangai Chaojimengnan, products.

These products, which originate in China, are being marketed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) and for sexual enhancement. Although labeled as dietary supplements, these products do not qualify as dietary supplements because they contain undeclared active ingredients of FDA-approved prescription drugs for erectile dysfunction. The products are thus drugs that are illegal because they lack FDA approval.

The undeclared ingredients in these products may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) and can lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Consumers with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates. ED is a common problem in men with these medical conditions. Because they may have been advised against taking ED drugs, they may seek out products like these because they are marketed as "all natural" or as not containing the active ingredients in approved, prescribed ED drugs. Additionally, because the manufacturing source of the active ingredients in these products is unknown, consumers should be aware that the safety, efficacy, and purity of these ingredients can not be validated.

Erect penis but no ejaculation after taking Viagra?

Viagra and similar preparations seem like wonder drugs to many older men, but they affect erectile function rather than ejaculation or libido. The nerve supply to the male genitalia that controls ejaculation is through the sympathetic system, which is responsible for acts as an accelerator. Conversely, erections are controlled by the parasympathetic nervous system, which acts as a brake.

Libido is controlled by several parts of the brain, another example of the truism that sex is as much about what happens between the ears as between the legs. Treatment you are having for your high blood pressure could well affect your ejaculatory powers.

Viagra was the first of the drugs to treat impotence and, therefore, its action is less effectively targeted on the genitalia. It dilates the penile arteries, which increases the blood supply to the penis and causes it to engorge.

Viagra’s power to dilate arteries also increases the blood flow through the retina so that vision may acquire a pink hue, and blood can accumulate in the limbs, temporarily taking it away from the brain, leaving patients feeling dizzy. The drop in blood pressure may also affect the coronary circulation.

Massage Your Penis For Bigger Size?

Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital Family Health Clinic specialist, Professor Dr Shaiful Bahari Ismail said massage of the penis and testicles might prove dangerous for people suffering from erectile dysfunction.

He said the only proven method of treating the problem was through modern methods, including medicines, surgery and vacuum pumps.

"There is a perception that massage can help improve sexual performance. However, it is believed to be either dangerous, ineffective, or both.

"Although there is no scientific research on the effect of massage of the private parts, massaging techniques carried out directly on the penis and testicles may damage blood vessels, the nerve system and even the skin," he said.

Dr Shaiful said many had visited his clinic complaining of ineffective traditional treatment of the problem.

He said most suffering from the problem were above 50 and usually diabetic, suffering from heart disease or high blood pressure.

"They only seek modern treatment after noticing that the traditional treatment, which they underwent to cure impotency, was ineffective. After diagnosing their problem, we treat them with medicines," he said.

Traditional masseur Mohd Zafri Harun, 35, who has been in the business for 15 years, claimed a success rate of 70 per cent.

"So far, most of my clients are satisfied with my service. They are happy with the size achieved after treatment," he said, adding that he had learned the techniques from his father. And it doesn’t come cheap either.

Zafri said a "standard package" was priced at between RM200 and RM300.

Nutty alternative to Viagra

It may sound nutty, but walnuts may just be the remedy for erectile dysfunction.

Developed by a team of researchers at Universiti Malaya (UM) for the past two years, a tablet containing walnut extract has shown potential as a local alternative to Viagra.

One of the researchers, UM Faculty of Medicine Physiology Department lecturer Prof Dr Kim Kah Hwi, said that so far 40 volunteers had tried the tablet and responded positively.

On its efficacy, Prof Kim said the new pill was comparable to Viagra and he claimed that it was safer as well, although a person would have to consume about 3.3kg of walnuts for the same effect as one tablet.

“It takes about an hour for the effects to set in and it will last for about four hours."
